5 MOVIES YOU SHOULD WATCH IN 2017

1) GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.2, MAY 5

Director: James Gunn

Why We're Excited: C'mon. How could this be anything less than fun? The first edition charmed audiences (and made loads of money to boot), and the eagerly anticipated sequel seems just as fun as the first, especially seeing that the powers that be have learned that the very literal Drax The Destroyer character is an unending source of hilarity.

Fun Fact: Mantis (Pom Klementieff), a new character in this installment, was actually a core member of The Avengers for a long time.

2) WONDER WOMAN, JUNE 2

Director: Patty Jenkins

Why We're Excited: Yay! A female director helming a big blockbuster superhero movie! After the macho debacle of Batman Vs. Superman, the weird stories that emerged about Suicide Squad, plus the awkward tonal shift towards humor in the upcoming Justice League, this film aims for the feminist feistiness that Disney's Star Wars additions have captured. Finally, DC opts for a straightforward origin story, instead of introducing 75 superheroes and setting them up to battle.

Fun Fact: This is the first female-focused superhero movie in twelve years. The last was Jennifer Garner's much-panned Elektra.

3) SPIDER-MAN HOMECOMING (JULY 7)

Director: Jon Watts

Why We're Excited: Many comic book readers consider the rascally teenage Spider-Man the best version of the superhero. By focusing on the high school-aged Peter Parker (who debuted in 2016's Captain America: Civil War), the film effectively resets the franchise's timeline. We're hoping that this allows ample room for the humor and rambunctiousness that make the comics some of the most beloved in the world. Also, by skating past the typical origin story, audiences get to see Peter figure out what being Spider-Man means...outside of being bitten by a radioactive spider.

Fun Fact: Tom Holland wanted the lead role so badly, he called in Avenger help via Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans, whom he had previously worked with, for help crafting his audition tape.

4) DUNKIRK, JULY 21

Director: Christopher Nolan

Why We're Excited: When in doubt, go for a high-budget, high-action World War II drama. It never fails. Set during an earlier part of the war, the film focuses on the Allied forces' evacuation of Dunkirk beach against overwhelming German forces. The idyllic setting and "against all odds" premise, plus a group of A-List Brit actors and the film debut of a certain Harry Styles will make Dunkirk a critical and financial darling.

Fun Fact: Visual expert Christopher Nolan apparently ditched CGI for traditional film effects here, so film goers will truly get that "boom."

5) VALERIAN, JULY

Director: Luc Besson

Why We're Excited: Please let this be good. Please, please, please let this be the film that puts a stop to the endless remakes, and entices studios to look outside of known franchises for new fodder. While Valerian is based on a 1970s comic, with Luc Besson of Fifth Element fame at the helm (and Cara Delevingne starring), vision and creativity seem to be a given—as long as the flick isn't just all cool Rihanna visuals and no substance.

Fun fact: Luc Besson has been working on this since 1991.
